Blake Post

1) Yes I do believe the editors of the book when they say that his poetry can change society. The poem that Blake has wrote paints a vivid picture of the boy working as a chimney sweeper. It shows how his family struggles forcing him to work so he can continue his own life. This causes the readers to feel bad for the boy. People in lower classes, and possible in the lower middle class could look at this poem and start to compare their life to the boy in the story. This may motivate people to try to change their current society. This means that the editors could have been right.

2) The reason the editor may include the document was to show the similarity to our time, and our social system. By compare our time to theirs we can see the similarities in the two systems. We may see how people in our time try through art, or media to change society like Blake did. This helped reading the poems easier since I could compared the poems to my on time.

Jonathan Swift Teacher Prep Work

A). This Question I have wrote for this assignment was:
1. Why does the Gulliver gain his freedom earlier then he was suppose to?
2. Does his newly gained freedom affect his decision to help the Lilliputians by protecting them?
3. What is Jonathan Swift satirizing in this part of the story?
4. Why does Gulliver agree to help the Lilliputians?

B). The teacher group I was working in this week was made up of Paul, Micheal, Matteo, and I. I learned a lot being in this group. Paul, and Mike always have a different way of looking at things which helped me see other sides of the story that I wouldn't normally think of. I didn't have much to offer to the group because my original question were not very in depth, already asked, or not important enough to actually have a class discussion on. Looking back I really wished I wrote better questions to contributed more to the group. Other then that it was a good group. A conversation was constantly going, and everyone got a chance to suggest an idea, or opinion. The only thing I would change would be my questions, and therefore my contribution to the group discussion.

C). Our group has an idea of what we are going to do. Although its not set in stone what we are doing, but we have the general idea. Most likely we will just come in on Monday, and finish working on our poster for the class. Mike will finish writing all the questions, and we will think about what was being satirized by Jonathan Swift about government and politics in this story.

A response to Orwell

In the novel 1984 George Orwell includes a section of a book inside the novel called "The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism", which is a book on the type of government that Party, and Big Brother have set up to rule over the many people of Oceania. I believe that this book was very important to the book to help the reader's understanding of their government, and how society work. But even more important it sets up a little knowledge to why Big Brother is doing what he does, and explains why everything happens. With this knowledge it is easier to understand why everything in there society happens from the bombs hitting the many building in Oceania, to the process of brain washing that is forced on people such as Winston.

It also seems that it helps to one understand what Big Brother's intentions are. That they do not rule from the better of humanity, and to help the common people. They rule for the power itself. With the combination of O' Brien's dialogue, and the book the reader's can see how Big Brother takes, and keeps control of the society, people, and all of Oceania itself. It also shows readers how the statement "if there's any hope it was in the proles." Finally, the book shows readers a better look at the society the people of Oceania are forced to live in, the social class as well as the goals of each social class. So in 1984 the book "The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism" is used to help the readers understand the society, people, the government, and Big Brothers purpose.
